The Super Bowl is the championship fixture from the National Football League (NFL), the premier association of American pro football. The big game was first played on January 15th, 1967 as part of a merger agreement linking the NFL and its then-rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It had been arranged that the two leagues’ champion teams would play in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game till the merger was consummated in 1970. Following the merger, every league became a conference, and the game was then played between the conference champions. The merger marked the launch of a new period in pro American football. The Superbowl was born. Now the Superbowl is the most viewed tv program every year. Hundreds of millions of people watch the game on tv and celebrate the event with friends and family. Billions of dollars in revenue is generated as a result of the Superbowl.
There was a time in individuals complained that Super Bowls were being uninteresting or anticlimactic. Not of late, though. The previous 2 years, the Super Bowl continues to be the very best game of the NFL season. Giants over Patriots, then Steelers over Cardinals. Both were brilliant competitions, both ended up decided by touchdowns in the closing seconds. Both produced the signature plays of their seasons. The David Tyree helmet catch was the signature play from that season, James Harrison going the length of the field for a touchdown just as time run out in the first half was the signature play of last year’s campaign. Might the Saints and Colts give the global viewers a 3rd consecutive brilliant Super Bowl? A signature play that purists would reminisce about decades from now?
